What Is a Clutch in CS2 and Valorant?
Winning a round as the last player alive against one or more enemies, written as 1v1, 1v2, 1v3 and so on.
What does clutch mean?
A clutch is when the last player alive on a team wins the round against one or more remaining enemies. Players describe it by the numbers involved: a 1v3 clutch means one player beat three opponents. The word is also used more loosely for any decisive play under pressure.
Why clutches are so hard
Alone, you have no teammates to trade, no one to share information with and usually little time left. Every mistake ends the round, while the enemy team can split up, trade each other and play the clock.
How to win more clutches
- Take a moment to gather information. Check the scoreboard, the time left and where enemies were last seen.
- Isolate your duels. Fight one enemy at a time instead of peeking into several angles.
- Use sound. Footsteps, reloads and utility tell you where enemies are and what they plan.
- Play the objective. Sometimes the round is won by planting, defusing or running down the clock, not by getting every kill.
- Ask for silence. Teammates who are already dead should only give short, useful information.
Example
You are the last defender in a 1v2 after the bomb is planted. Instead of searching for both enemies, you listen to their positions, catch one rotating alone, then use the remaining time to fake the defuse and win the final duel.
Clutch and retake
Many clutch situations happen during a retake, when defenders arrive one by one after the bomb or spike has been planted.
