What Is a Flip Reset in Rocket League?
An advanced Rocket League mechanic: touching the ball with all four wheels in the air gives you back your flip for a powerful mid-air shot.
What is a flip reset in Rocket League?
A flip reset happens when your car touches the ball with all four wheels while you are in the air. The game treats the ball like a surface you landed on, so you get your flip back without touching the ground. Players use that flip for a powerful or unexpected shot, often after an air dribble.
Why it works
When your car leaves the ground, you have a jump and then a flip (dodge). Once you use the flip, it is normally gone until your wheels touch a surface again. During a flip reset, the four wheels touch the ball, which counts as that contact, so the flip becomes available again in mid-air.
How to get a flip reset
- Start from a controlled [aerial](term:aerial), usually from the wall or after popping the ball up.
- Get under the ball so the bottom of your car faces it.
- Touch it softly with all four wheels at once. One or two wheels are not enough.
- Keep control with boost and air roll until you are ready to use the flip.
Using the flip
After the reset you choose when to flip into the ball. Flipping right into it gives a strong shot; waiting lets you fake the defender or adjust your angle. Many players also chain a second reset or use the flip to recover after the shot.
Example
You air dribble off the wall toward the opponent’s goal. The defender jumps to challenge, but you roll your car under the ball, touch it with all four wheels and gain your flip back. You wait until the defender commits, then flip into the ball and score past them.
Is it worth learning?
- It is high-skill and inconsistent at first. Most players need a lot of free-play practice before using it in matches.
- Basics come first: strong aerials, car control and rotation win more games than a flashy mechanic you can’t repeat.
- At high ranks it becomes a real threat because it is hard to read and to defend.
If you want a structured path from aerials to resets, our Rocket League coaches can build training routines around your level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all four wheels have to touch the ball?
Yes. A flip reset only happens when all four wheels make contact with the ball while you are in the air.
Can you get more than one flip reset in a single play?
Yes. Skilled players can chain resets by touching the ball with all four wheels again, though it is very hard to do consistently.
