What Are LP (League Points) in League of Legends?
The points you win or lose in each ranked game, used to climb divisions and tiers in League of Legends and TFT.
What are LP in League of Legends?
LP (League Points) are the points you gain for winning a ranked game and lose for losing one. Reach 100 LP in a division and you move up to the next one. How many LP each game is worth depends on your hidden MMR.
How LP move you up the ladder
Every tier from Iron to Diamond has four divisions, from IV (lowest) to I. Each division is a 0–100 LP bar. Break 100 LP and you promote straight away, keeping any leftover points: finishing a win at 112 LP in Silver III puts you in Silver II with 12 LP.
Hitting 100 LP in division I takes you to the next tier, for example from Gold I to Platinum IV.
Why LP gains differ between players
There is no fixed amount per game. When your MMR is above your current rank, wins pay more and losses cost less; when it is below, the opposite happens. That is why two players in the same division can see very different numbers after a win.
Losing LP and demotion
- Inside a tier: lose more LP than you have and you drop a division. With 5 LP in Silver III, a 20 LP loss leaves you in Silver IV with 85 LP.
- Between tiers: dropping a whole tier is softened. Instead of falling to 0, you land at 25, 50 or 75 LP depending on how far your rank is from your estimated skill.
- [Rank decay](term:rank-decay): from Diamond up, long breaks from ranked can also cost LP.
LP in Master, Grandmaster and Challenger
The apex tiers have no divisions and no LP cap: your points simply keep adding up. Grandmaster requires at least 400 LP and Challenger at least 800 LP, plus more LP than the lowest player already in that tier in your region. These standings refresh once every 24 hours.
Teamfight Tactics uses the same idea: you climb its ranked ladder with LP as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many LP do you get per win?
It varies. Riot does not use a fixed number: your MMR compared to your rank decides how much each win and loss is worth.
Are there still promotion series?
No. Reaching 100 LP promotes you immediately, and any extra LP carries over to the new division.
Can you lose LP in placement matches?
No. During your placement games a loss gives 0 LP; your starting rank is set once the placements are done.
