What Is Power Level in Destiny 2?

Your character’s overall strength, based on the average Power of your equipped gear, which decides how hard activities feel.

What is Power level in Destiny 2?

Power level (often still called Light level) is the number that represents your Guardian’s strength. It is based on the average Power of your equipped weapons and armor. Each activity has a recommended Power: below it, enemies hit harder and take less damage from you; at or above it, the activity plays as intended.

From Light level to Power

In the original Destiny and early Destiny 2, the stat was called Light. Bungie renamed it Power in Shadowkeep, but “Light level” is still common in the community. The idea stayed the same: better gear raises the number, and the number unlocks harder content.

How the climb works

  1. Regular drops raise Power quickly at the start of a season or expansion, up to a first cap often called the soft cap.
  2. Powerful rewards from weekly activities push you further.
  3. Pinnacle rewards from the hardest content are needed for the last levels.
  4. Infusion lets you move Power from one item into another, so you can keep your favorite god roll at a high level.

What The Edge of Fate changed

The Edge of Fate reworked progression: Power moved to a new scale, and it now determines the tier of gear you can earn from activities, with higher tiers bringing better perks and stats. The exact caps and steps are set per season, so check the current values in game before planning your grind.

Does Power always matter?

Not always. Many endgame activities cap or lock Power so that being far above the recommendation does not make them trivial, and some Crucible modes ignore it entirely. In those cases, build, teamwork and knowing the encounter, or a well-known cheese, matter more than the number.

Example

A player is 15 Power below the recommendation for a dungeon. Enemies take noticeably longer to kill and every hit hurts more. After a week of powerful and pinnacle rewards, they reach the recommended level and the same encounters feel manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Power level the same as item level in other games?

It works in a similar way to item level in World of Warcraft: an average of your equipment that gates harder content.

Why do players say “Light level”?

It was the official name in the first Destiny and early Destiny 2, and many players kept using it after the rename to Power.
