What Does AFK Mean in Gaming?

Short for “away from keyboard”: a player who stops playing or leaves during a match, or idles in a game.

    What does AFK mean?

AFK means away from keyboard. It describes a player who is not playing, either for a moment (“AFK 1 min, getting water”) or for the rest of a match. In competitive games, going AFK leaves your team a player short and is usually penalized; in MMOs it often just means idling in a city or farming.

    AFK in competitive games

In a 5v5 game, one AFK player turns the match into a 4v5, which is very hard to win. That is why most competitive games treat going AFK, disconnecting on purpose or abandoning a match as an offense, with penalties that grow for repeat offenders.

    • League of Legends: an automatic system detects leavers and applies warnings, queue delays and ranked restrictions; a remake vote is available early if a teammate never connects.
    • Dota 2: abandoning a match can send you to Low Priority, a separate queue you must win games in to leave.
    • Valorant and CS2: AFK and leaving players receive penalties such as queue bans, and in ranked they can also lose rating.

AFK in MMOs and idle games

In World of Warcraft and other MMOs, AFK is often harmless: your character stands in a city while you are away. AFK farming, however, means leaving the game to farm automatically; when it uses scripts or bots, it breaks the rules. Many games also disconnect players who stay idle too long.

    Example

A support disconnects at minute 5 and never comes back. The team plays 4v5, loses the game and reports the player. The system flags the leave, and the player gets a queue delay on the next games.

    AFK, inting and tilt

Some players go AFK out of frustration after a bad start, a form of tilt. Staying in the game but sabotaging it is different: that is inting. Both hurt the team, and both are reportable in most competitive games.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it AFK if my internet drops?

Technically yes, and the game will count it. Occasional disconnections rarely lead to heavy penalties, but frequent ones are treated like leaving on purpose, so reconnecting quickly matters.

    What does “brb” mean?

“Be right back”: a short AFK where the player promises to return in a moment. It is common in casual games and MMOs.
