What Is an IGL in CS2 and Valorant?
The in-game leader: the player who calls strategies, manages the economy and makes mid-round decisions for the team.
What does IGL mean?
IGL stands for in-game leader, the player who leads the team during the match. The IGL chooses the strategy for each round, decides when to buy or save, reads the enemy’s tendencies and makes the mid-round calls that adapt the plan as the round unfolds.
What an IGL does
- Calls the round plan: a default, a fast execute, a split between two sites or a fake.
- Manages the economy: decides on full buys, force buys and eco rounds so the team buys together.
- Assigns utility: who smokes, who flashes and when, so the utility of five players works as one.
- Makes mid-round calls: rotating after a pick, switching sites when one is stacked or organizing a retake.
- Reads the opponent: notices patterns, like a defender who always pushes, and builds counters for the next rounds.
Types of IGL
Some IGLs are structured, with a large playbook prepared before the match. Others are mid-round callers who rely on reading the round in real time. In pro CS2, IGLs often take a supporting role and sacrifice their own stats to keep the team organized, while in Valorant many IGLs play Controller or Initiator agents, whose utility shapes the round anyway.

The team plans a B execute on Mirage, but an early pick in Mid kills the enemy AWPer. The IGL immediately calls “go A through Mid and Palace”, the team rotates through the open space, plants with a 5v4 and wins the round.
IGL in Solo Queue
In ranked without a fixed team, someone calm who gives short, clear calls often wins more rounds than the best aimer. Simple instructions, such as “stack B, play for trades, no solo peeks”, are already a form of in-game leadership.
