What Is Utility in Valorant and CS2?
Grenades and abilities such as smokes, flashes and molotovs that control space and information instead of shooting.
What does utility mean in Valorant and CS2?
Utility (or util) is everything you use in a round that is not your gun: smokes, flashes, molotovs, recon tools and other abilities. Utility blocks vision, blinds enemies, denies areas and gathers information. Using it well, and together with the team, wins more rounds than aim alone.
The main types of utility
| Type | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke | Blocks vision to cross or cut off an area | CS2 smoke grenade, Omen’s Dark Cover, Brimstone’s Sky Smoke |
| Flash | Blinds enemies so you can peek safely | CS2 flashbang, Phoenix’s Curveball, Skye’s Guiding Light |
| Molly / area denial | Forces enemies out of a spot or stops a defuse | CS2 Molotov and incendiary, Viper’s Snake Bite |
| Info | Reveals enemy positions before anyone peeks | Sova’s Recon Bolt, Fade’s Haunt, CS2 decoys and sound |
Utility in Valorant vs. CS2
In CS2, utility is grenades bought from the shop: every player can carry up to four, with at most two flashbangs, and it is the same for everyone. A smoke can extinguish fire and an HE grenade can briefly clear part of a smoke. In Valorant, utility comes from the agent’s abilities: most are bought each round, the signature ability is free and recharges, and the ultimate is charged with ult points. Choosing an agent is choosing a utility kit.
How to use utility better
- Use it with a purpose. Each grenade should help take, hold or retake a specific space.
- Coordinate timings. A flash thrown right as your teammate peeks is worth more than three thrown alone.
- Learn a few lineups. A reliable lineup lets you throw from safety.
- Do not die with utility. Unused grenades are wasted money, a big deal in eco rounds.
- Utility makes trades easier. A flash before the swing turns a risky duel into a safe trade.
Example
On Mirage, the T side smokes CT and Jungle, flashes over the wall and throws a Molotov at Stairs. With the main angles blocked and defenders blinded, the team enters A in a 5v3 and plants.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “save your util” mean?
It means keeping grenades or abilities for later, usually for a retake or a post-plant, instead of using them early with no clear purpose.
Who decides how the team uses utility?
In organized teams, the IGL plans who throws what and when. In Solo Queue, short calls like “I smoke, you flash” already make a big difference.
