What Is Last Hitting in Dota 2?
Landing the killing blow on creeps in Dota 2, the main way heroes earn gold in lane.
What is last hitting in Dota 2?
Last hitting is landing the killing blow on a creep. In Dota 2, only the hero who lands that final hit gets the creep’s gold, while experience is shared by nearby heroes. Good last hitting is the foundation of farming: more last hits mean more gold, earlier items and a stronger hero.
Why last hits matter
- Gold goes to the killer: creeps that die to other creeps, towers or random hits give no gold to you.
- Items come from gold: cores need last hits to buy the items that win fights later.
- Experience is separate: you still gain experience from creeps dying near you, even without the last hit.
How to last hit better
- Learn your hero’s attack: attack animation and projectile speed decide when you have to start your attack.
- Don’t push the wave: hitting creeps too early makes the wave push and gives the enemy safe farm under their tower.
- Watch creep health: time your attack so it lands right as the creep drops into one-hit range.
- Combine it with [denying](term:denying): taking your own low creeps away from the enemy widens the gold gap.
Example
Your melee creeps are fighting the enemy wave. You stand back, wait until an enemy ranged creep is low, then step in and hit it just before it dies. You get the gold, and the enemy carry misses that creep entirely.
Last hits in Dota 2 vs. CS in League of Legends
The idea is the same as creep score in League of Legends, but Dota 2 adds denying, which lets players take last hits away from opponents. That makes the laning phase a fight over every creep. If you want help improving your laning, our Dota 2 coaches can review your games.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I get gold if a creep dies near me?
No. Only the hero who lands the killing blow gets the creep’s gold. Experience is shared with nearby heroes.
How can I practise last hitting?
Use a lobby or demo mode with no enemies, focus on one hero and repeat waves until your timing is consistent.
