What Is Roshan in Dota 2?
Dota 2’s strongest neutral creature: killing him gives your team the Aegis of the Immortal and other rewards that can decide the game.
What is Roshan in Dota 2?
Roshan is the strongest neutral creature in Dota 2. Killing him drops the Aegis of the Immortal, which lets the hero carrying it come back to life once after dying, and later kills add extra rewards. Because the Aegis can swing a fight, taking Roshan is one of the biggest objectives in the game.
What Roshan gives
- Aegis of the Immortal: the hero holding it respawns where they died shortly after death. If unused, it expires after a while.
- Extra items on later kills: after the first kill, Roshan drops additional items, such as Cheese. Which items drop and from which kill has changed between patches.
- Gold and experience for the team that takes him.
Where Roshan is
In recent patches Roshan has two lairs, and he moves between them with the day and night cycle. The exact location of the pits and the visibility rules around them have been adjusted several times, so check the current map before planning your move.
When to take Roshan
- After winning a fight: with enemies dead or retreating, your team can kill Roshan safely.
- When your carry needs safety: the Aegis lets your strongest hero fight more aggressively.
- Before a high-ground push: an extra life makes attacking the enemy base much less risky.
- Watch the respawn: Roshan comes back after a random delay, and both teams try to track it.
Example
Your team wins a fight in the river and kills three enemies. Instead of chasing the last two, you go to Roshan, take the Aegis for your carry and push high ground with an extra life.
Roshan and the Tormentors
Dota 2 also has Tormentors, separate objectives that give different rewards. Teams often decide between Roshan, Tormentors and towers depending on the situation. If you want help with these decisions, our Dota 2 coaches can review your games.
