How Does MMR Calibration Work in Dota 2?
The first stretch of ranked games in Dota 2, where low Rank Confidence makes your MMR move a lot until your medal settles.
What is MMR calibration in Dota 2?
MMR calibration is the period when Dota 2 is still working out your skill. Your Rank Confidence starts low, so each win or loss moves your MMR much more than usual. As you play and the system becomes more certain, the swings shrink and your medal settles where you belong.
Rank Confidence explained
Since patch 7.33 in 2023, Dota 2 ranked uses a Glicko-style system. Besides your MMR, it tracks how sure it is about that number, shown as Rank Confidence. Low confidence means big MMR changes per game; high confidence means smaller, steadier changes.
That is why calibration matters so much: the games you play while confidence is low have an outsized effect on where your medal ends up.
Before you can calibrate
Ranked is not open to brand-new accounts. You need a minimum amount of playtime, a linked phone number and an account in good standing with a decent behavior score before Valve lets you queue ranked.
Medals after calibration
Once the system is confident enough, your MMR shows as a medal: Herald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient, Divine and Immortal, from lowest to highest. Every medal below Immortal has five stars; Immortal players are ranked on a regional leaderboard instead.
Tips for a good calibration
- Play your best role and heroes. Calibration is not the time to experiment.
- Queue when you are rested. A losing streak while confidence is low costs a lot of MMR.
- Avoid abandons. They count as losses and hurt your behavior score.
Example
Two new players each win their first games in a row. Because their confidence is low, both jump several medals quickly. Later, with high confidence, the same streak would only move them a few stars.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many games does Dota 2 calibration take?
Valve does not publish a fixed number. Your medal settles as Rank Confidence rises, which depends on how consistent your results are.
Why did I gain or lose so much MMR in one game?
Probably because your Rank Confidence is low. While the system is unsure about your skill, each game moves your MMR more.
