What Is a PUG in World of Warcraft?
A pick-up group: a team of strangers formed through the group finder for a dungeon, raid or other group content.
What does PUG mean in WoW?
A PUG is a pick-up group: a group put together with players you do not know, usually through the Premade Group Finder, instead of with your guild or friends. In World of Warcraft, players pug Mythic+ keys, raid bosses and PvP brackets. Pugging is the fastest way to play group content without a fixed team, but results vary a lot more.
PUG vs. automatic queues
| Tool | How groups form | Is it a PUG? |
|---|---|---|
| Premade Group Finder | A leader lists a group and accepts or declines applicants | Yes, the classic way to pug Mythic+ and raids |
| Dungeon Finder / Raid Finder | The game builds the group automatically | Players are strangers, but it is usually just called a queue |
| Guild or friends | A fixed team that plays together regularly | No, the opposite of a PUG |
Pugging Mythic+
Most players pug Mythic+ at some point. Group leaders often filter applicants by their Mythic+ rating, item level and experience in the dungeon, usually checked on Raider.IO. The player who owns the keystone usually leads, and a failed run lowers that key.
Tips for better PUGs
- Write a clear listing: the key, the goal (timing or just completing) and the roles you need.
- Agree on the route and Bloodlust timing before the first pull.
- Interrupt and use defensives. In PUGs, the basics decide more runs than raw damage.
- Stay calm after a [wipe](term:wipe). Many PUGs fall apart after the first mistake, not after the tenth.
- Add good players to your friends list to build your own group over time.
Example
A healer lists a +10 key in the Premade Group Finder, asking for players with a similar rating. The group times the key with a clean route and good interrupts. Afterward, the healer adds the tank and one DPS as friends, and the next weeks they run keys together instead of pugging.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are PUGs considered harder?
Strangers do not share routes, calls or habits, and anyone can leave after a mistake. A coordinated group usually performs better at the same item level.
Can I raid Mythic with a PUG?
Normal and Heroic PUG raids are common. Mythic raiding needs a fixed 20-player group and a lot of coordination, so it is rarely pugged beyond the first bosses.
