What Is Split Pushing in League of Legends?
Pushing a side lane alone to pull enemies away from the rest of the map while your team holds elsewhere.
What does split push mean?
Split pushing is a macro strategy where one strong duelist pushes a side lane on their own, while the other four group or hold the middle of the map. The enemy must either send players to stop the pusher, opening the map for your team, or lose towers and inhibitors.
Why split pushing works
Every minion wave that reaches a tower has to be answered. A split pusher creates a problem in a lane far from the action: if one enemy goes to defend and loses the duel, the push continues; if two go, your team has a numbers advantage at Baron, Dragon or the mid tower. Good split pushing forces the enemy to make bad choices.
Common setups
- 1-4: one player in a side lane, four grouped in the middle or around an objective.
- 1-3-1: two side lanes pushed at the same time with three players holding mid, which stretches the enemy to the maximum.
- Teleport pressure: the split pusher keeps Teleport ready to join a fight the moment it starts, turning a 4v5 into a 5v4.
Who split pushes
Champions that win one-on-one fights and take towers quickly, such as Fiora, Jax, Tryndamere, Camille or Yorick, are the classic split pushers. The strategy is strongest after a power spike that lets them beat anyone sent to stop them.
Example
At 25 minutes, a Fiora pushes the bottom lane while her team shows at Baron. The enemy sends two players to stop her. Fiora backs off toward her tower, and her team starts Baron in a 4v3 and secures it.
The risks
Without vision or a way out, the split pusher can be collapsed on and killed, leaving the team in a 4v5 right before an objective, one of the most common ways to throw a game. Good wave management before pushing and wards on the enemy jungle entrances reduce that risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does split pushing work in solo queue?
Yes, but it depends on the team understanding the plan. If the other four start a fight without you, the split push becomes a 4v5 loss.
What is a 1-3-1 split push?
A formation with one player in each side lane and three in the middle, designed to stretch the enemy across the whole map.
