What Is Wave Management in League of Legends?

Controlling where the minion wave meets in lane by choosing when to freeze, slow push or fast push.

What is wave management in League of Legends?

Wave management is controlling where the minion waves meet in your lane. By choosing how fast you kill minions, you decide whether the wave sits near your turret, builds up slowly or crashes into the enemy tower, which changes how safe you are, how much you farm and what you can do next.

Why the wave position matters

The side with more minions pushes the wave toward the other team’s tower. Where the waves meet decides who is safe: a wave near your turret protects you and exposes your opponent, while a wave under the enemy tower gives you time to recall, roam or help with an objective.

The main techniques

TechniqueWhat you doWhy
FreezeKeep the wave just outside your turret by only last-hittingSafe farm for you, risky farm for the enemy, easy setups for your jungler
Slow pushLet a bigger wave build up over timeCreates a large crash later, or pressure while you do something else
Fast push (shove)Clear the wave as quickly as possibleBuys time to recall, roam or move to an objective
CrashPush the wave into the enemy turretMakes the next wave come back toward you (the “bounce”)

Example

You win a trade and have low mana. Instead of walking back immediately, you shove the wave into the enemy tower and then recall. Your opponent has to stay and farm under tower, so you lose almost no CS while you are away.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing without vision when the enemy jungler’s location is unknown, which leaves you open to a gank.
  • Recalling with the wave in the middle of the lane, letting it crash into your tower and costing you CS.
  • Never breaking an enemy freeze, which slowly starves you of gold and experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wave management an official mechanic?

No. Minion behavior is part of the game, but freezing, slow pushing and the other techniques are strategies players developed to use it.

When should I freeze?

Usually when you are ahead or want to stay safe, and the wave is already near your side. It lets you farm while your opponent has to overextend to reach minions.
